Learning to paint again.

With muraling, I had parameters—limits. Each project came with its own set of constraints. Sometimes it was the style, other times the budget, but I could always narrow down my creativity based on the client's prompts or the set parameters. Painting on my own is very different. I have no limits, no boxes. The creative freedom I thought I eagerly anticipated became a mental block. I like so many different things, styles, subjects, and surfaces that I felt stifled for about three years, spending a lot of time in my studio organizing paintbrushes instead of painting. I had to learn to create my own parameters and narrow my focus by developing "collections." I give myself a prompt and then paint 3-5 original works within that prompt.
My most recent one is "The Cowboy Chronicles." These works reflect what I have seen and experienced living on a ranch in Alabama. It is a group of paintings that have helped me understand the cowboy culture I've been immersed in. I am very proud of this collection. The styles are diverse and somewhat scattered, much like my life here right now.
My next "collection" is already in progress. It will be completely different from anything I have done before. I am excited!
